FAQ

Students' Elections at KIT

Disclaimer: this is not an official collection of information, but an informal compilation of potentially relevant practical information. For official information, please refer to the announcement of the election as well as the OSVS (both German)

Why should I vote?

- The Student Parliament is the legislative body of the student body and represents all students at KIT. The representatives you elect represent your interests in university politics.

- Your strong voice in your faculty is the student council, over which which the student council spokespersons preside.

- Your vote has an influence on the study conditions here at KIT.

- You elect students who help to shape your studies so that university politics also takes us students into consideration and so that the student representation of interests (the student parliament and the AStA, as well as the student councils) can offer strong support.

- So that the voices of student representatives are heard in the committees of KIT.

Who can vote?

All students enrolled at KIT in the summer semester 2023 are eligible to vote - details can be found in the election announcement. (announcement of the election)

How is the election held?

- The election takes place on campus. There will be multiple polling places.

- In the election for the student parliament you have one list vote (first vote), which you can give to a list.

- In addition, you have five personal votes (second vote), which you can distribute as you wish. I.e. you can give several votes to one person, but also distribute the votes over several persons on different lists. The ranking of the candidates within a list is determined exclusively by the personal votes cast.

- For the election of the student council representatives you have different numbers of votes depending on your faculty. You can find a detailed list in the election announcement. You may give up to two votes to the same person

- The democratic principles apply to the elections:

- Universal

- Equal

- Free

- Secret

- Direct

Why on campus instead of online?

After the online elections in 2020 and 2021, there were election challenges, which were dealt with by the council of elders. Because of this the recommendation was made to hold these elections on campus again, which is why the student’s parliament decided not to hold another online election. Furthermore, the costs for an online election are significantly higher than for an on-site election.

Who can I vote for?

- The student’s parliament

- The spokespersons of the student council of your faculty
